The
idea for the creation of the LAC-WSP-NET starts with
the existing partnership between the Pan American Health
Organization (PAHO/WHO), the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) and the United States Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) that promote the initiative
of the World Health Organization on "Water Safety
Plans", as an approach to a risk evaluation and
characterization taking into consideration the health-based
objectives, for the improvement of drinking water quality.
For this purpose, the LAC-WSP-NET partnership has summoned
other organizations to join efforts for supporting and
promoting the LAC-WSP-NET organization and management,
that was initially gather together, besides the PAHO/CDC/EPA
partnership, the World Health Organization (WHO), the
Inter-American Association of Sanitary and Environmental
Engineering (AIDIS) and the International Water Association
(IWA).
The LAC-WSP-NET main aim is to improve safety
in the drinking water supply systems in the Latin American
and the Caribbean Region through an accelerated development
and implementation of the Water Safety Plans
The mechanism that will be used by the LAC-WSP-NET for
the development of these activities is its Strategic
Plan 2008-2010 to fulfill the four objectives:
advocacy, communication, research and implementation
through its Action Plan for
the initial implementation of some activities already
funded, to promote the WSP development and implementation
within our Region with a wide participation of the Network
Members. The Strategic Plan 2008-2010 (draft) and Action
Plan 2008-2009 have been reviewed by representatives
of 12 countries of the LAC Region, at the meeting
held in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, from
9 to 10 April 2008, to discuss and establish work commitments
in order to achieve the objectives established for the
Net within its Action Plan and the official launch at
the XXXI AIDIS Sanitary Engineering and Environment
Congress in Santiago de Chile, from 12 to 15 October
2008.
